Having won the bronze medal in the recently concluded Womens World Chess Championship in Turkey recently, chess player Soumya Swaminathan believes that it was erroneous playing in the last four rounds of the championship that cost them the team performance medal eventually.
Swaminathan who was in the city to speak about the recently concluded tournament says,We began very well. In fact for the first six rounds we were only one and a half point behind China and had a good chance to take gold in the team event, but post the sixth round we made some crucial errors that cost us the game.
She was in the city along with Russian GM Evgeny Vladimorov for an event sponsored by Lakshya and FLAME University.
Speaking more about the World Championships, she says, another reason why the team faltered at crucial junctures was because India made it to the championships at the very last minute. We did not have much time to attend a training camp or even practice before the tournament.
The opening game and the end game strategies are the ones where the games are either won or lost. Even after we lost to Russia we had a chance to make a comeback when we defeated Greece in the next round. Crucial errors made in the matches with Romania and China owing to the time pressure cost us a team spot, she adds.
Happy with her bronze medal, she hopes to earn more. I start with a camp under GM Evgeny Vladimorov from today. This alongwith with a number of high profile tournaments in the coming year will help me to improve my game, she says.
