(Photo source: dpuhospital.com)The DPU Super Specialty Hospital in Pimpri recently treated a 32-year-old woman for a rare congenital tumour known as lymphangioma that had compressed her surrounding abdominal organs, causing severe pain and a palpable lump in the abdomen.
The patient, a resident of Pune, had been grappling with this rare condition for nearly five years and was admitted to the hospital in November last year.
Dr. Samir Gupta, HOD of Surgical Oncology, and Dr. Prashant Chandra, consultant onco surgeon said post-diagnosis, it was identified that the tumour was present since birth and was gradually expanding in size.”It was in the last five years that she started to feel uneasiness,” said doctors.
The patient underwent a four-hour long surgery to remove the cystic tumour, which measured an extraordinary 22x11x11cm. Removing the water-filled cyst was an intricate and complex process, as it was surrounded by kidney, intestine and liver, requiring careful separation to ensure a safe extraction.
The success of the surgery resulted in the complete cure of the illness, bringing immense relief to the patient who was discharged within five days of the surgery.
Dr. Gupta said the exceptional rarity of the medical condition, coupled with the intricate complexity of the case, rendered the surgical procedure extremely challenging.
“The meticulous protection of adjacent abdominal organs during the cyst extraction added to the intricacy and time-intensive nature of the procedure. With the world-class surgical infrastructure at DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, we were able to extract the cyst with utmost precision successfully,” said Dr Gupta.
Dr. P.D. Patil, chancellor of Dr. D.Y Patil Vidyapeeth (deemed to be university), Pimpri, said they want to elevate the standard of healthcare so that there is a positive impact on patients’ lives.
