Atul Dahale overcame some stiff resistance from top seed Akshayraj Kore in the final round to be crowned champion of the 2nd PNG International Rating Chess Championship at the Deccan Gymkhana Monday.
Dahale was forced to battle it out against the International Master Kore for over four hours,in a match that lasted 63 moves,but ultimately triumphed to finish on 8.5 points,half a point above runner-up Shailesh Jaiswar,who beat Sohan Phadke in the final round. Phadke took third place with a final tally of 7 points.
The PNG Championship was a great success,with 25 out of 64 unrated players being able to complete their rating requirement criteria through their participation in the tournament.
