An accused in a dacoity case who had escaped from the custody of Bundgarden police on August 21 was arrested from a bus stop in Katraj by a team of anti-extortion cell on Monday.
The accused,22-year-old Rajesh Papul alias chor Raja, had a case registered against him at Swargate,Hadapsar and Bundgarden police station under Sections 399 and 402 of the Indian Penal Code for dacoity and assembling for dacoity. Papul was locked up at Bund Garden police station because the crime branch, which was investigating a case against him,did not have its own facility for custody.
On August 21,Papul was taken out of the lock up as he wanted to go to the toilet. Before the constable on duty could close the door,Papul kicked him and escaped. A police officer with the Bundgarden police station had chased Papul but had failed to nab him.
An investigating team lead by Kishor Jadhav, police inspector with anti-extortion cell of Pune police Crime Branch, arrested Papul. Bharat Kindre, police sub-inspector with anti-extortion cell said,We came to know that the bike he was using had tagline fakta tuzya sathich dhadas (Courage, only for you) written on it. He was staying at Kapurhol and used to travel to places by bus.
He often used his bike to come to a bus stop. Till a month ago,he used to stay at Chikhli and used to commit thefts in nearby areas. Papul was arrested on August 19 and escaped from remand after three days. We have recovered a laptop,a bike and five cell phones, all stolen, from him. He will now be kept in a lock-up either at Vishrambag police station or at Swargate police station, Kindre said.
