Says JP Shroff,CREDAI member and chairman of the Labour Welfare Committee,”we submit the health report card to the individual builders who then treat the workers at their own expense. Those that are anemic have been given iron and calcium tablets to those that need it. Skin diseases which is very prevalent is given the required treatment by the individual; builder and so is chest and gut infections. There were two cases of elephantitis that were treated by the individual builder and 25 cataract surgeries were also done.

”When we started this health check for construction workers two years ago we had no clue that there would be so many with problems that can mar productivity.

While it is easy to lay off sick workers,we as responsible employers felt the need to provide adequate treatment for the diseases. However this was done on an individual level and not on behalf of the Association

In the second phase of the health check,CREDAI Pune aims to complete the health checks of all construction workers.
