With various city courts functioning from rented premises, the Pune Bar Association (PBA) has written to NCP leader and Union minister Sharad Pawar, asking him to intervene and help it get back three acres of land of Shivajinagar godown that once belonged to the court.
The land of Shivajinagar godown earlier belonged to the court. Around 40 years ago,it was given for counting votes during elections. However with electronic voting machines in place now, there is no need for so much space for counting, while all our courts family, consumer, cooperatives, labour and industrial are scattered in the city functioning from rented premises, said PBA president Milind Pawar.
In fact, four years ago,PBA had written to the Collectors Office, demanding the return of the land but did not get any response.
Hence, the bar submitted a memorandum to Sharad Pawar on the issue when he was in the city last week.
If the land is handed over to court,it could also be used for the mobile bench of Bombay High Court that has been our demand, Milind Pawar said.
He added that considering the expanse of the city,it is always convenient for lawyers and litigants if all the courts are housed within close proximity to each other. The construction of new building of family court is going on near the existing Shivajinagar court, and is expected to be complete by March 2012.
The Pune district consumer court is located on Satara Road and there is a demand to shift the court to Shivajinagar.
Seema Bais, registrar of Pune district consumer disputes forum (consumer court),said a letter seeking the shifting of the consumer court to Shivajinagar was sent to the district Collector last year.
It is housed on a rented premises on Satara Road since 2001.
She said the proposal, pending with the Chief Minister, was likely to be cleared soon.
The present consumer court houses Pune district and additional Pune district consumer disputes redressal forums with six courtrooms. Similarly, the Pune district labour and industrial court is located in the PMPML building at Swargate.
