Contract workers stage protest

Around 200 contract labourers from various industries in Pune staged a protest outside the Labour Commissioner’s Office in Wakdewadi on Thursday.

Around 200 contract labourers from various industries in Pune staged a protest outside the Labour Commissioner’s Office in Wakdewadi on Thursday.

Their demands included fixed minimum wages for contract labourers,identity cards and strict implementation of Contract Labourers (Regulation and Abolition) Act,1970.

The protest was held under the aegis of Kamgar Anyay Pratikar Samiti,an organisation formed to fight injustice against workers.

“We had put forth the same demands on May 1 this year before the Labour Commissioner’s Office along with a request to conduct an inspection in 46 small and medium scale industries in the state,including Pune,regarding the implementation of rules pertaining to contract labourers,” said advocate Santosh Mhaske,Samiti chairman.

He said that a report of the inspection was to be given to the Samiti within two months,but it has not received the report yet.

The Samiti office-bearers handed over a memorandum to deputy labour commissioner,T G Cholke,with the request of completing the inspection by August. “If they fail to do so,we will organise a statewide agitation,” Mhaske said.

Justice (retd) BG Kolsepatil,president Lok Shasan Andolan,Anna Dhumal,Samiti secretary,RV Sharma,president,Pune Mazdoor Sabha,Shivaji Tapkir,president,Pimpri Chinchwad Kamgar Sanghatana and others participated in the agitation.
