Ahead of the civic elections, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated and performed bhumi pujan for 19 development projects in Pimpri Chinchwad such as a 100 MLD water treatment plant at Chikhli and a Rs 311-crore administrative building of the municipal corporation on Monday.

“The city should not just be aesthetically beautiful but also be a sustainable one. To make it a sustainable city, the availability of ample water is necessary. Pimpri-Chinchwad will now get 100 MLD water and it will help ease the water problems currently being faced,” Fadnavis said.

Fadnavis said that in future, Pimpri-Chinchwad would also get 167 MLD water from the Bhama Askhed dam in Khed. “I will ensure that the land acquisition process is completed quickly. I will ensure that the files from different departments are approved within one month’s time,” he said.

The BJP leader said that over three lakh flats would be set up in the industrial city in future. “We will have to provide water to them. We will have to ensure that we have adequate sources of water at our disposal. We will have to plan in advance,” he said.

Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge said there was a pressing need for Pimpri-Chinchwad to get district status. “Residents in Pimpri-Chinchwad have to rush to Pune for government work related to the tehsildars and other officials. These days, due to traffic congestion, a lot of time, money and energy are wasted. Even otherwise, the city is expanding from all corners and therefore if district status is granted, it will come as a big boon,” he said.

The BJP MLA thanked Fadnavis for scrapping a Rs 460-crore penalty imposed on illegal structures and sanctioning a police commissionerate for Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Fadnavis, who was slated to arrive around 11 am, came at 11.45 am and straightaway inaugurated BJP MLC Uma Khapre’s office. He then went to Chikhli to inaugurate the water treatment plant, located in another part of the city. From there, his cavalcade came back to Chinchwad, where he inaugurated a planetarium and performed bhumi pujan for the 18-floor building of the municipal corporation. He then moved to Akurdi, where he inaugurated an auditorium named after Ga Di Madgulkar.
