The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) standing committee on Tuesday raised the life insurance cover for its fire brigade staff from Rs six lakh to Rs ten lakh along with a provision of Rs six lakh for permanent disability in case of any eventuality during work.
The fire brigade staff are involved in risky work of rescuing citizens during fire, floods or building collapse. The insurance cover to them was low compared to the risk factors involved in carrying out their duty. Thus,it was increased, said standing committee chairman Nilesh Nikam.
The civic body will pay the premium for the insurance cover,he added. Nikam said the civic panel gave priority to the mobile computer literacy project,Sharad Sanganikya Yojana, that was launched last year on the birthday of NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
The mobile vans were available, but the project could not be implemented as no good institute came forward. Now,the contract has been given to four institutes, Nikam said.
Meanwhile, the proposal to initiate legal action against civic staff for alleged corruption in public toilet scheme was postponed for the next meeting.
Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade on the basis of the report filed by the Anti-corruption bureau has proposed to file chargesheet against the accused civic staff.
