Celine Mascarenhas had no idea that she was waving her last goodbye to her husband as he left for work on his two-wheeler on December 2. Owner of a real estate business,Joe was hit from behind by a garbage dumper of the Pune Municipal Corporation when he stopped at the Bhairoba Nallah petrol pump near Fatimanagar to refuel his scooter while returning home.

According to the First Information Report filed at Wanowrie police station,Joe came under the dumpers front wheels. The postmortem examination report from Sassoon General Hospital states that he died of multiple injuries.

Fatimanagar,Bhairoba Nallah and Ramtekdi junctions are high risk zones at the Pune-Solapur stretch that frequently see major and minor accidents.

According to the traffic police,there have been 74 accidents in Wanowrie. In November this year,there were five major and five minor accidents.

When contacted,Deputy Municipal Commissioner Suresh Jagtap admitted that there have been three fatal accidents involving the corporations garbage dumpers and 21 minor accidents in the past one year.

However,he said,that time and again they issue guidelines to the drivers of road and garbage dumpers. The Central Institute of Road Transport also trains 50 drivers during its workshop.

According to an eye-witness,Joe was crossing the lane to reach the petrol pump at Bhairoba Nallah. The front right wheel of the dumper hit his scooter. Joe lost balance and fell under the dumpers tyres that crushed his left hand and ribs. He passed away on way to Sassoon General Hospital.

The driver of the dumper Govind Gandal was arrested,but released later.
