City NCP chief and Rajya Sabha MP Vandana Chavan and MHADA-Pune chief Ankush Kakade have been appointed as the spokespersons of the state wing of NCP. Both have served as city Mayors during the Congress rule in the civic body. Chavan,who shifted to NCP few years ago,was also elected to state Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha early this year. Kakade was the spokesperson of party for western Maharashtra.

Voters’ registration drive from October 1

The district election department is all set to start voters’ registration drive from October 1. To spread awareness regarding the drive among citizens,the department conducted street plays,painting and essay competitions. Deputy collector for elections Apurva Wankhede said that it will be a one month drive. The draft roll of the voters list will be published on January 1 and the final list will be out on January 5 next year. As of now,the district has around 65 lakh voters. The new drive will ensure that all the voters are registered in the district ahead of the 2014 elections. Last year’s drive saw an increase of 1.26 lakh new voters. The voters ID card or the EPIC card will be distributed by the department and the final list is likely to be published on January 25.

Santosh Mane victim gets Rs 25,000 aid

Kairali Charitable Foundation,a Malayali charity organisation working for Keralites settled in and around Pune,handed over a financial aid of Rs 25,000 to Praful Rajmohan Nair who was seriously injured in a road mishap caused by the reckless driving of ST bus driver Santosh Mane. The organisation received the aid from Kerala government through NORKA (Non-Resident Keralites Affairs Department). The aid was handed over to Nair at a meeting of representatives of various Malayali organisations. The grant was handed over to Nair by K Radhakrishnan,Under Secretary,Government of Kerala. A youngster from Kerala Sheriff Ibrahim Kutty,who courageously entered the running bus and stopped Mane from causing further damage,was also felicitated.

Animal adoption camp tomorrow

Blue Cross Society of Pune will conduct a mixed-breed puppy and kitten adoption camp at Nagarwala Day School in Kalyaninagar on Sunday. As part of the camp,Blue Cross will also provide counselling and training tips to new pet owners. “Adoption of puppies and kittens ensures reduction in stray dog and cat population,” said Anjali Malaney of Blue Cross Society. The adoption camp will take place from 11 am to 5: 30 pm and prospective pet owners can register for the event between 9 and 11 am. UNEP to mark World Ozone Day

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will mark World Ozone Day on September 16. The day commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol – an international treaty to phase out substances that deplete ozone. The day creates awareness about the ozone layer that protects the earth from possible catastrophic events. “The day reminds us about the harm the human activities can cause to the environment,” said Dr Ninad Sheode,Assistant Professor of Foundation for Liberal and Management Education (FLAME),who conducts courses in atmospheric science.

Free cardiac check-up camp from Sept 17

To observe its 40th Foundation Day,the N M Wadia Institute of Cardiology will organise a free heart check-up camp from September 17-22. During the camp,the hospital will offer free consultation,ECG,blood cholesterol test and blood sugar test besides offering 40 per cent discount on all in-house OPD investigations.
