Container overturns on Expressway,traffic blocked
A Container overturned near Khandala on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway on Wednesday,causing a major traffic jam for nearly five hours in the morning. Police said the brakes of the Aurangabad-bound container failed around 2.30 am near Khandala,following which it overturned and blocked the lanes for Pune-bound traffic. Delay in getting a crane and subsequent technical snags made it difficult to restore traffic immediately. Two more cranes had to be pressed into service.
Water supply to be disrupted
There will be no water supply to several areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad,including Dapodi,Sangvi,Thergaon,Pimple Nilakh,Wakad and Aundh hospital area,on Thursday evening owing to repair works at Ravet pumping station. A PCMC release also said the water supply would be at low pressure on Friday morning.
Finally,thousands of school students staying in Pimpri-Chinchwad will get free passes after August 15. Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Sharma said the students would not be required to queue up for getting applications and passes. “The application forms and passes will be delivered at their respective schools. The schools will have to do the rest,” he said. “All the students who seek passes will be given the facility. We will pay whatever amount is required to the PMPML.”
Motorcyclist dies in road mishap
TWENTY-one-year-old Prasad Gaikwad was killed in an accident on Pune-Mumbai Highway at Pimpri on Tuesday afternoon,when he tried to avoid hitting a pedestrian. According to the police,Gaikwad was heading towards Nigdi through the grade separator at Pimpri when a pedestrian was trying to cross the road. Gaikwad,in a bid to avoid hitting the pedestrian,skidded on the road and suffered injuries on his head. He died on the spot while the pedestrian was admitted to the YCM hospital,police said. Prasad,a resident of Kasarwadi,was unmarried and is survived by parents and two sisters.
55-yr-old hit by motorcycle,dies
55-year-old Manjusha Shende,a resident of Aparna Residency,Kothrud died after a speeding motorcycle knocked her down on Kelewadi Road on Tuesday evening. The Kothrud police have booked the motorcyclist,Dheeraj Sudhakar Thakre (24) of Aundh Road. Police said that the accident took place around 8.45 pm. The Kothrud police are investigating the case.

Madhavan Pillai elected
K Madhavan Pillai has been elected the new president of Lions Club Pune Sapphire. He took charge from former president Joy Joseph at an official programme organised at Akurdi. The event took place in the presence of former governor Hasmukh Mehta,region chairman K M Roy and K Harinarayanan. The Orphange at MohanNagar and Cancer Investigation Camp of International Lions club was also donated with a cheque of Rs 5,000 each on this event.
