File photo of Yerwada Central Jail. (Express Photo by Pavan Khengre) A 29-year-old undertrial at Yerawada Central Prison in Pune was caught possessing charas while he was brought back to the jail on Tuesday afternoon after a court appearance, officials said.
The undertrial, identified as Shubham Harishchandra Paste, is an accused in a murder case and has been lodged in Yerawada Central prison since October 2017.
“The on-duty guards found a packet of charas hidden in his private parts as Paste was preparing to enter the prison. The prison officials approached the police station and filed a complaint,” said an officer at Yerawada police station
Paste was taken out of the prison on Tuesday morning and was brought back around 2 pm, he added.
Police have booked Paste under Prisons Act provisions pertaining to taking prohibited items into prisons and also relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Investigators said that the role of on-duty police personnel in the prisoner escort party will also be probed in the case.
