The fourth edition of the certificate course on Law and Alternative Sexualities begins from August 1.
“Building on the success of the previous three editions, this course continues to educate and empower participants in the critical history, socio-legal, medical, and mental health aspects relevant to the LGBTQIA+ community,” Dr Renu Naidu, chairperson, equal opportunities cell, Marathwada Mitra Mandal Shankarrao Chavan Law College, told The Indian Express.
“Every year, we conduct programmes during pride month and participate as an institution. Programmes are also arranged during the national coming out day held in the second week of October and this is one of our flagship events,” Dr Naidu added.
The cell was set up in 2021 and through educational and awareness initiatives, it seeks to cultivate a culture that understands and appreciates differences. The certificate course is for three months and those who are eligible to participate include undergraduates/graduates/law professors/teachers/medical and mental health professionals/gender educators. “We have even got applicants from IIT in the past,” Dr Naidu said.
“The aim of our equal opportunity cell is on providing a barrier-free, inclusive and diverse environment. We want to ensure that individuals, regardless of their background, enjoy equal access to opportunities,” Dr Naidu said, adding that they also try to eliminate discrimination based on factors such as race, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion, or any other characteristic, promoting a culture of fairness and equality.
Speakers/industry experts include Prof. Dr. R. Raj Rao, Dr. Kanchan Pawar, Dr. Kaustubh Joag, Aruna Desai, Dr. Sanjay Sharma, Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, Sr. Adv. Anand Grover, petitioners from the marriage equality case and many others.
“The course will provide engaging assignments through PPTs and a research paper to assess the participants understanding and verbalising them effectively,” Dr Naidu said. Apart from scheduling a gender sensitisation programme every year for the students, this year the equal opportunities cell is also conducting a faculty development programme on July 6.
