Students in the city opt to take up short-term jobs to put their college vacations to good use.

It’s that time of the year when colleges shut for vacations — the hours suddenly seem longer and students have a shortage of things to do. This time though, students in the city are not in the mood to laze around and while away time. Anticipating the soon-approaching languid days, they are looking for summer jobs to put their free time to good use. The reasons are plenty, ranging from the desire to learn something new to earning brownie points on their resume and earning some useful pocket money. Some are also taking up summer jobs to pursue their hobbies.

Nime Sherpa,a BCom student at Symbiosis Institute of Arts and Commerce,is in the process of contemplating career choices. She is taking up a summer job to experience a real job and make a wise decision. “I want to work as an intern at one of the firms in the city. The hands-on experience will also help me convert textual knowledge into practical application, which is what matters when you get a job,” she says. Shamika Vaidya, fourth year student of law at Firodia College, agrees with Sherpa. “Summer jobs are the best way to utilise the free time we have on our hands. We get to meet and interact with new people and learn the norms of the profession we want to take up after completing our formal education. In fact, taking up a job related to the course we are studying also helps us understand our subject better,” says Vaidya.

Along with the undergraduates, even post graduate students are on the prowl for a summer job where they can put theories into practice. Neha Upadhyaya, who is pursing a PG diploma course in tourism from Trade Wings Pvt Ltd,is looking to work with a travel agency as soon as she finishes her semester exams. “It will train me for the real world. Taking up a short term job with a travel agency will help me get a chance to impress employers and possibly have a career with them,” she says.

Seventeen-yar-old Deven Valecha has opted to give tuitions. Having just given his HSC exams,Valecha is teaching maths to students studying commerce. “It is a good way to earn some extra money and since I have just studied the same,it is beneficial for me too. I make around Rs 5,000 on an average every month, which is a good amount for me,” he says.

The thrill of experimenting also leads students to opt for jobs that do not match their career path. Manisha Sharma, student of literature at Nowrosjee Wadia College, wishes to pursue a career in teaching but has set her heart on joining a theatre group during the holidays. “The idea of a summer job for me is a combination of fun and work and with acting I can mix the two. I would love to join a theatre group where I can meet new people, learn to express, act and also earn a little money,” shares Sharma. She adds that joining such groups do not require a long-term commitment. “Since the group takes up only one play at a time,it gives me the chance to enjoy the experience and rejoin whenever a new story is about to be enacted,” says Sharma.

For those who want to earn some quick bucks during their spare time,a job with a call centre is also popular. Manisha Upreti,a student at Nowrosjee Wadia College, believes that the fixed timings and attractive incentives make call centre jobs a lucrative way of spending her vacations. “Since the companies also provide training,it is rather easy to sign up,” she says.
