Three faculty members of a private engineering institute in Chinchwad drowned while swimming off Harihareshwar beach on Sunday morning. While the body of Nikhil Kale (24) was found in the evening,the police were still searching for the bodies of Kushal Satale (24) and Shweta Watane (23) with the help of villagers. The three had ventured into the sea despite warning boards,said an officer.
Kale hailed from Yavatmal,Satale from Lonavala and Watane (23) from Amaravati. Police said their driver,Sachin Suryawanshi,tried to rescue the three but did not succeed.
According to Shriwardhan police in Raigad district,11 members of the faculty of Yashaswi Institute of Technology in Chinchwad had decided to go to Harihareshwar on Saturday. Inspector R G Raskar said,They arrived at the beach near Harihareshwar temple around 8 am on Sunday.
He added,Shweta entered the waters first. Nikhil and Kushal followed. However,they ventured to an area where depth of the sea increases suddenly. This,despite their colleagues telling them not to go deeper. On hearing their cries,Suryanwanshi jumped into the sea to rescue them.
Speaking to Newsline,Suryavanshi said,Kale and Watane were trying to stay afloat but Satale was struggling as he couldnt swim. When I approached them,the three tried to cling to me at the same time because of which I went under water. I tried to rescue all of them but could not succeed.
Raskar said,There have been several cases of drowning near the spot in the past. We keep a watch on tourists at the beach but the spot where they drowned is behind a hillock and is secluded.
Pradeep Tupe,director of Yashaswi Institute of Technology,said,The three were graduates in Electronics Engineering. Satale stayed in Lonavala while Kale stayed in a rented apartment in Chinchwad. Watane stayed in Karvenagar. Their families have been informed of the incident.
