Pune Vidyarthi Gruha’s centennial celebrations, which was presided over by the President on Thursday witnessed Union Heavy Industries Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi taking potshots at each other. While Deshmukh is the president of PVG,Joshi is the executive member and both made no bones about their political differences on the dais.

While Joshi started the ball rolling by taking a dig at Deshmukh that he might be keen on aspiring to be president but now with President Pratibha Patil’s sortie in a fighter plane there will have to be a new criteria set. Joshi was also candid about the president’s role in PVG and said that he was keen on knowing what projects are being planned with the funds coming in by way of donation.

Deshmukh on his side was not the one to sit back on the comments and said that it was time executive members with Kohinoor institutes – referring to Joshi’s institutes – all across the state needed to donate for PVG than just ask for donations.

“It’s high time that executive members running such high profile institutes should donate funds to the institution,’’ he said.

Deshmukh also captured on the Marathi manoos theory of the Sainiks and said all Maharashtrians were proud of a Maharashtrian president who had entered the Guinness Book of Records for her feat in flying a fighter plane.

He also answered Joshi’s question on the work being undertaken by PVG. He said PVG had undertaken work upto Rs 30 crore.

Meanwhile,Deshmukh mooted for the government to grant special aid to institutes that have completed 100 years. He said as chief minister,he had mooted it and now with Dr Suresh Shetty as protocol minister and higher and technical education,he should address this issue. “It should be a policy decision,” he said. While Manohar Joshi in his effort to convey that education is very important and higher education can benefit people said that if one does not study one can only aspire to be state transport conductors or police constables.
