Five days after the police firing that killed three protesting farmers in Maval,Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Sunday visited the victims’ families and the injured at Talegaon hospital as BJP workers shouted anti-government slogans outside. Chavan also visited the spot on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway where the firing had taken place.

At 4.15 pm,Chavan reached the Maharashtra Institute of Medical Education and Research Hospital in Talegaon. For the CM’s visit all the injured except the two in orthopaedic ward were shifted to the ICU from the general ward, hospital sources said. The Chief Minister spoke to the injured and inquired about their treatment.

As the CM reached the hospital,a large number of local BJP workers wearing black arm bands shouted anti-Congress-NCP slogans outside the hospital. Additional Superintendent of Police Meghsham Malegaonkar said,“As the protesters were proving to be an obstacle for the security arrangements of the CM,some of them, including the local MLA Sanjay Bhegde, were detained and were sent to Talegaon Dabhade police station. They were not arrested.”

Next,Chavan visited the spot of the incident, causing a 15-minute traffic jam on the expressway. The Chief Minister later visited the family of Kantabai Ankush Thakar (40),who died of a bullet injury,in Yelse village. He then visited Sadavali, the village of Sham Tupe, who was in his early 20s. At both the places,Chavan faced the wrath of family members. At Sadavali,an elderly relative of Tupe shouted at Chavan saying,“Why don’t you shoot us too…”

At Shivane village, the CM met the family of Moreshwar Sathe (40),the third victim. Cousin Kisan Sathe said,“We put forward our demands and told him that some compensation in money will not do. What about the future of the family? At least the expenses of education his children must be borne by the government and jobs guaranteed… We also demanded that SP Sandeep Karnik be suspended till all facts come to the fore.”
