Economist and political analyst Dr Ajit Ranade, who was terminated as the Vice Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) on September 14, had approached the High Court demanding an urgent hearing for a stay on his termination on September 18. Though Ranade wasn’t granted an urgent hearing, the matter was scheduled to be taken up in the court first on September 23.

The Bombay High Court had directed that Ranade’s termination order as GIPE vice chancellor shall not be given effect till September 23.

The ad interim order granted on 18 September 2024 expired on Wednesday. Accordingly, the matter was posted for 26 September, 2024.

Ranade was issued a termination letter by GIPE chancellor Bibek Debroy after a fact finding committee found his candidature did not conform to the established norms set forth by the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.
