Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar once avoided sharing the stage with his estranged uncle Sharad Pawar on Thursday as he skipped the annual general body meeting (AGM) of the Pune-based Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI).

The AGM of VSI is one of the most significant events for the country’s sugar industry as it is an important institute in terms of research and outreach. Ajit has been a member of both the board of trustees and the governing body of the VSI for the last several decades.

Ajit and his uncle Sharad had rarely missed any AGM of the institute before the fallout between the two last year when a majority of the elected representatives of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajit joined the BJP-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra.

The VSI is headed by Sharad Pawar while the post of the vice-president is held by minister Dilip Walse-Patil- another of the NCP MLAs who had sided with Ajit. Walse-Pati had offered to resign from the post but Sharad Pawar asked him to continue.
