As the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) gears up for the two most important accreditation visits of the year from next week, it has asked department heads to ensure that all areas around their departments are cleaned up.
In two separate circulars issued to all departments, varsity officials said that the University Potential Excellence (UPE) committee would be visiting all departments at SPPU for its yearly inspection from January 7-9. Prior to this important visit, the vice-chancellor, along with senior officials, paid a visit to the departments and found that a lot of waste material like unused furniture, books and defunct equipments were lying around in corridors, passages and areas surrounding the departments.
“We found that certain departments were not tidy enough. At the university, we have a set procedure to dispose off materials called the condemnation process. One has to fill out formalities like time of purchase, value, depreciation, reasons for writing them off and so on, which some people might not be too enthusiastic to follow. Hence they keep putting it off but we cannot allow things lying around when the UPE committee or even a committee from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) comes to visit in February. So, we have asked them to auction or dispose them off,” said Wasudeo Gade, vice-chancellor, SPPU.
However, when told about the circular which asks departments to ensure that the items are kept at a place which is out of sight of visiting officials, Gade said that he had no idea. “Of course, they should not have written that. It’s a bad choice of words since people would only put things out of sight and hence, no real solution would come out of it. I will look into this, but the idea is not to make cosmetic changes,” he said.
