A week ahead of the results of the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the University of Pune (UoP) for the first time, several colleges have joined hands to demand that the test be conducted afresh.
The varsity had conducted the test for admission to BBA,BCA and BBM (IB) courses offered by various educational institutions on May 31.
Some reputed colleges in the city are now saying that information about the test had not reached many deserving students. Only 8,192 students appeared for the CET conducted for admissions to around 13,000 seats. These institutions fear losing some good students who could have made it. The CET merit list decides the intake to the courses.
Colleges offering these courses are thinking of joining hands to decide on the course of action, said Anand Lele,vice-principal of Garware College of Commerce.
The response to the CET was poor though the courses are in huge demand as they are considered as a stepping stone to post-graduate management courses and the colleges believe it was mainly because many students did not get information on time.
The university started the process of conducting CET soon after the class 12 exams were over and therefore many students didnt come to know about it,officials of these colleges say. Now,over 4,000 seats are set to be vacant. University officials say colleges that cannot fill the seats can get a chance to conduct their own CET. Again, this idea is being opposed by many reputed colleges as they feel their seats would get filled up first and so they would not get a chance to conduct their own test.
And in case less reputed colleges conduct the test, many students who are much better and who could not attempt CET will have to opt for colleges they may not want, according to the principal of a reputed college.
He said the varsity should conduct another CET so that every aspirant gets an equal chance to get admission to the college of their choice. Around 30 colleges offering these courses had met just before the CET was held to bring the issue to the notice of the varsity. Principals of many colleges also said the university did not come up with clear guidelines about the CET even after repeated demands.
When contacted,pro-vice chancellor Arun Adsool said the varsity had finalised the guidelines and would come up with it on Wednesday.
