AC e-Shivneri buses for Thane at hourly frequency
On May 1, MSRTC inducted a number of new e-Shivneri and e-Shivai buses at a function at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

WITH THE launch of electric Shivneri buses on Swargate-Thane route on May 1, the environment-friendly service is now available at an hourly frequency for travellers from Pune’s Swargate stations. A total of 14 e-buses have started operation on the route – seven each from Pune and Thane divisions of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).
On May 1, MSRTC inducted a number of new e-Shivneri and e-Shivai buses at a function at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
“These buses offer a very comfortable rides for the passengers. Being electric buses, they are also environmental friendly and don’t cause any pollution. It’s a win-win situation for both the passengers and the state transport corporation,” Shinde had said at the inaugural function on Monday.
He said that MSRTC will soon start a total of 100 e-Shivneri buses which will run on Dadar-Swargate, Dadar-Pune, Thane-Swargate and Borivali-Swargate routes. “Over a long term, all the buses in the fleet will be electric buses,” said Shinde.
Commuters are happy with the new service. “This is a very comfortable bus,” Harish Jain, a passenger who boarded the e-Shivneri from Swargate on Wednesday said. “This will save cost in fuel. Hopefully, the MSRTC will bring down the fare from the current rate of Rs 515,” said Jain.
As per MSRTC officials, the operation costs of e-buses are 20-30 per cent cheaper than existing diesel Shivneri buses. They also provide air-conditioned comfort and noiseless rides with zero emission. They are also equipped with GPS devices and ramps for differently-abled passengers.
Officials with Pune Division of MSRTC said that the first e-Shivneri will depart from Swargate for Thane at 6.45 am.
“Then after every hour, one e-Shivneri will leave from Swargate. The last bus from Thane will leave for Pune at 6.45 pm. It will reach Swargate at 10 pm,” said an official.
The newly inducted e-Shivneri buses have a seating capacity of 44 and there’s a separate place for luggage. The buses are equipped with CCTV cameras and after one full charge, they can travel for 300 km.
