The family of Himayat Mirza Baig has appointed A Rehman as his lawyer. Rehman argued on Baig’s behalf on Monday. He said he decided to represent Baig after his family members approached him in Aurangabad.

“The family had been searching for a lawyer. His brother had come to Aurangabad and I was there at that time. Someone referred my name to Baig’s brother,who approached me. I agreed to represent Baig as he has the Constitutional right,” said Rehman,who is the general secretary of the state Nationalist Congress Party Minority Cell.

The Pune Bar Association (PBA) had made an appeal to lawyers not to take up Baig’s case. Today PBA president Milind Pawar repeated the request to Rehman. Pawar said,“We requested him to shun Baig’s case. Rehman replied he respects the appeal of the PBA,but will represent Baig as it is his Constitutional right.”

Several lawyers raised slogans against Rehman. The lawyers,all PBA members,also held a meeting on the court premises in protest against Rehman taking up the case.

The NCP has condemned Rehman for taking up Baig’s case. “We strongly condemn him for representing Baig. Rehman would be removed from the party if he is firm in representing Baig. We have called a meeting on Wednesday,when senior leaders will discuss the matter,” said NCP spokesperson Ankush Kakade.

On Sunday,the Shiv Sena and BJP had warned advocate Sushil Mancharkar from Pimpri,who had aired his intention to defend Baig,to stay away from the case.
