A Different Note

Moving on from his Agnee days, former band member Sanket Sane is producing independent music and revamping old classics

Sanket Sane has only uploaded a teaser track on his Facebook page for now,but it is enough to get a listener hooked and impatient about the final release. Starting with soft keyboard notes, the music is like a stream of crystal clear melodies flowing its course. Then a soulful voice calls out to his lover,“Mera id walla chand kithe udta jaawe kithe”,and in an instant it connects with the listener in a unique combination of despair, pain and serenity.

It’s not the kind of song that would get you jiving; it is one which makes you shut the world out and follow the lead of vocalist Ranjan Batra,a young talent from the UK,who has recently ventured into the Indian music industry.

“A few weeks ago,Ranjan called me and said he wanted to work with me. He found my number from Just Dial. I asked him to come over to my place since he was close by and we started jamming. Normally,I would charge a handsome amount from clients who I have to compose or arrange music for,but things just clicked with Ranjan and I told him we would skip the commercial part and concentrate on the music. The way we were coming up with new songs was like magic,” says Sane, who quit city-based band Agnee a year ago to focus on his independent music.

He adds that they were working on a project when Batra started to hum a completely different tune, one which caught his attention. They decided to put the former project on hold and start working on the tune and they finally developed it into Eid walla chand. Since Sane wanted to launch the song independently,he shot a video for it at his uncle’s workshop in Mumbai. The track will be released next week, promises Sane,as inquiries spam his Facebook wall and inbox. The musician is excited about the platform that social networking sites present to independent music artistes. “YouTube is the best way to get noticed,it is nothing less than performing on a worldwide stage. Ranjan and I have a series of original compositions that we will be releasing as singles, independently on my Facebook page,” says Sane.

This apart,he also has his hands full with producing music in collaboration with big names like Prajakta Shukre,Bhagya Pandit and Vikas Khanna for an album. It will feature old classics with revamped music by Sane,he says. “I am excited about a song titled Babul with Prajakta and an electronic version of one of Pt Bhimsen Joshi’s compositions that will be sung by Bhagya,” he adds.

Sane is also involved with a Bollywood production which features an acid rock version of a “Ram Bhajan” by Tulsidas.
