Koshish,a musical event incorporating various genres from Indian classical to Sufi poetry on a single platform, aims to mesmerise art lovers

After a gap of two years,Koshish – a musical extravaganza will be held in Pune this Friday. Promising an amalgamation of Indian classical music,North Indian music, western art music, jazz and sufi poetry,Koshish is conceptualized and composed by noted singer Shubha Mudgal and her husband Aneesh Pradhan.

Presented by Ishanya Art & Culture Club, the programme will feature other artistes too including percussionist Pratap Rath, jazz drummer Benoni Soans,Bass guitarist Joquim Dais, sarangi player Murad Ali and Bass player Cuthbert Dsilva.

Having mastered their own genre of music and style, each of these performers will offer something exceptional for the Pune audience through their recitals.

Speaking about Koshish,Shubha Mudgal says,“As the name suggests,we are trying to create a musical dialogue between the artistes who are geniuses in their own art form and are from different parts of the world. It also gives us an opportunity to listen, study and discover diverse art forms. For instance, though Aneesh and me have sticked to our own style of music but we are extremely fond of Sufi poetry.” Being a traveling musical event,Koshish has been organised in other cities and overseas too. Besides popular numbers like Ab Ke Saawan and Mann Ke Manjire, some unreleased songs are also in store for the music enthusiasts.

Though Mudgal has visited the city in the past for various performances, she feels that her association with Pune is much more beyond a successful concert. “I visited the city for the first time in 1987 and stayed with my guru Pandit Jeetendra Abhisheki. I will always be indebted to him and his wife. So instead of making a cliché statement like ‘Pune is a city of art and culture and I love performing here’,I would rather say that it is a pleasure coming to the city simply because I have my most valuable memories attached to it,” says Mudgal. However, one thing that Mudgal is happy about is that though the city has undergone tremendous change topographically,it’s love towards music and art is intact.

When questioned, what gives her a creative high – a live performance or cutting an album like Ab Ke Saawan, she replies,“Both mediums can give a great sense of satisfaction but it also depends upon the factors attached with the two. Like,an artiste may not like to be a part of very prestigious musical event where music is not valued but sometimes performing in a small hall with great artistes can be very fulfilling.”
