6.34 lakh to vote in 14 municipal councils, 3 municipal panchayat

As many as 6,34,940 voters will vote in the elections to 14 municipal councils and three municipal panchayats in Pune district on December 2, the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) announced on Tuesday. In all, 398 corporators will be elected across 222 wards in these municipal councils and municipal panchayats, according to information provided by Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi.

Baramati is the largest municipal council with 20 wards and 41 corporators, followed by Phursungi Uruli Devachi with 16 wards and 32 corporators.

Out of the total 222 wards, 51 will elect a single corporator, 166 will elect two corporators, and five wards will elect three corporators.

Voting will take place at 730 centres, an increase from 515 centres in the previous elections. There will be 811 EVM Control Units (CUs) and 1,623 Ballot Units (BUs). July 1 had been declared as the cutoff for registration in the voter list for the upcoming election.

Of the 17 municipal councils, Baramati is the only A Class council. Five councils are B Class namely Lonavala, Daund, Chakan, Talegaon Dabhade, and Phursungi Urali Devachi. Eight municipal councils are Class C namely Saswad, Jejuri, Indapur, Shirur, Junnar, Alandi, Bhor, and Rajgurunagar.

Out of these, elections will be conducted for the first time in new municipal council Phursungi Uruli Devachi and new municipal panchayats Manchar and Malegaon Budruk.

In the 2024 Vidhan Sabha elections, 6,31,194 voters had been registered in the same area limits. An increase of 3,746 voters has been observed for the current election.

Dudi said, “We have received around 3,000 tadipaar proposals from police departments for the elections and we have asked our officers to take a detailed call regarding these.”

The Collector added that around 17,000 voter names had been identified as duplicate or triplicate in the voter rolls. “We have identified 17,000 such names. Care will be taken at booths that such people are able to vote only once. This usually happens when a person shifts from a village to a city and the name is not deleted from the earlier roll.”

Dudi said the previous elections had a voter turnout of 71 per cent, and that the administration was working towards a turnout of 75 per cent this time. All voting booths were located on the ground floor and will have drinking water, bathroom, and ramps for PwDs. In all, 3,240 election officers have been appointed for the election.
