Abhimanyu Puranik pulled off a major upset in the second round of the 2nd PNG International Rating Chess Championship yesterday,beating International Master Arun Vaidya in 56 moves. Puranik,with a rating of 1752,is a student of the Symbiosis School. The victory gave the youngster his first win over an International Master.

Aakanksha Hagawane also produced a game which was much higher than her billing to hold former Inter-Industrial Champion Ardhendhu Mandal to a draw. Hagawane played an extremely stubborn game,not allowing her higher-rated opponent to break through. Both players traded blows for 43 moves before settling for a draw.

Top seed Akshayraj Kore secured an expectantly easy victory over veteran Subhash Kale,employing a Sicilian defense to thrash his opponent.

Tomorrow’s lineup promises some exciting matches,as all the players left in the fray are rated players,and the draw is a perfect combination of youth and experience.
