At least two women lost their money after calling a fraudulent helpline number displayed at an ATM kiosk of State Bank of India (SBI) in Wadgaon Dhayari in Pune.

One of the women, who is a resident of Wadgaon Dhayari, lodged an FIR at Nanded City police station on Wednesday. According to the FIR, the complainant came to the SBI’s ATM kiosk near Sai Puram society in Wadgaon Dhayari around 10.20pm on April 18. While withdrawing money, her card got stuck in the ATM machine.

According to police, she called the helpline number displayed at the ATM kiosk. The person, who received the call, told her that he cannot come to the spot as it was a holiday on the occasion of Good Friday.

Following his instruction over phone, she entered her ATM card pin number in the machine. Within sometime, Rs 50,000 was deducted from her bank account but the machine did not disburse the money.  Police said another woman lost Rs 40,000 in a similar manner after calling the “helpline number” displayed at the same ATM kiosk.

The two women approached bank authorities but on not getting any help, they filed a complaint with the police. Subsequently, an FIR was lodged against the accused under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police suspect the fraudsters tampered with the ATM machine and put the wrong helpline number inside the kiosk to cheat people who come to withdraw money.

According to police, the bank cards inserted by the customers got stuck inside the machine. When the customers called the helpline number, the fraudsters posing as bank personnel received their calls and duped them by giving misleading instructions.
