Vehicles, thatched houses and shops were torched and several people injured in communal flare-ups reported over Ram Navami processions in Sasaram and Biharsharif towns on Friday. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in both towns. Internet services have been suspended in Biharsharif for two days.
Sasaram and Biharsharif are district headquarters of Rohtas and Nalanda. Around 20 people suffered injuries in the incidents and there were talks of firing in Biharsharif, sources said.
The Rohtas administration has imposed prohibitory orders in some parts of Sasaram and beefed up security in view of a public gathering scheduled to be addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday. Shah has been on a state tour and has already held public meetings in Purnia and West Champaran.
Rohtas district magistrate Dharmendra Kumar Singh and SP Vinit Kumar are camping at the spot after two groups clashed on Friday afternoon and stone-pelting was seen near Navratna Bazar of the town. There is no report of any casualty so far.
Nalanda Police said though the Ram Navami procession passed peacefully through Biharsharif Thursday, two groups clashed Friday when a “shobhayatra” was being carried out from Hospital Road to Baba Maniram Ka Akhada under Laheri police station area, where there is a sizeable Muslim population.
