President Droupadi Murmu said Friday that the excellent performance of girls in education for some years had been a “reflection of India’s progress in building a better society”. The President was speaking at the convocation ceremony of the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) in Gaya, a function that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar skipped.
Out of 103 gold medallists at CUSB’s third convocation, 66 were girls.
“Excellent performance by girl students in almost all higher educational institutions is a very pleasant change. It is a reflection of India’s progress in building a better society,” President Murmu said, lauding the achievements of CUSB, Gaya.

Murmu said the country had been proud of the fact that the world’s first republic was in Bihar. “Since ancient times, Bihar has been famous for nurturing talents. Scholars like Chanakya and Aryabhata made revolutionary contributions in the field of mathematics and science along with the social system, which helped in the development of humanity. In this university also, the school buildings have been named Aryabhatta Bhawan and Chanakya Bhawan,” Murmu, who concluded her three-day Bihar visit on Friday, said
Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar lauded CUSB’s teaching arrangements and regular sessions. CUSB Vice-Chancellor Professor Kameshwar Nath Singh said, “We are making positive efforts to restore the glorious past.”
Nitish gives event a miss
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who had attended the convocation functions at Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) in Motihari and AIIMS in Patna, skipped the CUSB function on Friday. Kumar is yet to attend a function at CUSB, Gaya.
Both the CM House and CUSB sources said that Kumar had been invited to the function.

A JD (U) source said that he never had the best of equations with CUSB ever since the former UPA government sanctioned the central university for Bihar in 2009. “When the UPA government decided to base it at Gaya in February 2014 in place of Nitish’s preference for Motihari, the Bihar CM was upset. Even though Bihar got another central university at Motihari, his frosty relationship with CUSB, Gaya, continued,” the source explained.
