Mumbai woman, teen ‘lover’ arrested for rape, murder of her 2-year-old daughter
The Mumbai police are pressing charges of gang rape against the mother as she was allegedly present when the child was sexually abused.

The Mumbai police have arrested a 30-year-old woman and her 19-year-old “lover” for the alleged rape and murder of her two-year-old daughter Sunday. The police said they are pressing charges of gang rape since the teenager allegedly raped and smothered the girl with a pillow in the presence of her mother.
According to police sources, the woman has been staying at her mother’s place ever since her husband left her three years ago when she was pregnant. After a few months, she gave birth to the girl. During her stay at her mother’s place, she came in contact with the accused teenager and they fell in love, said the police.
A police officer said the teenager, who does not work, had expressed his desire to have a physical relationship with the girl and sought permission from her mother. The mother allegedly allowed him to sexually abuse her daughter and was present when the crime took place, said another officer.
The girl screamed in pain and eventually lost consciousness, said the police. The mother and the teenager then took her to a government hospital. “To cover up, the woman told doctors that her daughter had an epileptic attack,” said a police source.
At the hospital, doctors declared her brought dead and alerted the police after discovering injuries to the child’s private parts.
“The girl had injuries on her private parts, and her internal organs were damaged. We immediately nabbed the woman and her boyfriend and placed them under arrest,” an officer from the local police station told The Indian Express.
During sustained interrogation, the two admitted that the girl was sexually abused by the teenager in her mother’s presence, said the police.
A team of forensic officers visited the crime scene and collected evidence. The clothing of both the girl and the accused will also be seized as part of the investigation.
The police registered a case of murder, gang rape and sexual assault against the woman and the teenager under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. They will be produced in a court Monday.
