A 63-year-old woman riding pillion on her nephew’s scooter was killed in an accident after being hit by a water tanker on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred in Jogeshwari (East) while the woman was returning home after attending a ritual for her late brother-in-law at her nephew’s residence.

Police said that the scooter rider, Aditya Jadhav, 19, sustained minor injuries in the incident.

According to the police, the complainant Aditya Jadhav lives in the Saidham Wadi area of Jogeshwari (East) with his mother, elder brother, and uncle’s family. His cousin aunt, Asha Dattaram Jadhav, 63, resided with her son, Suraj, 21, around two kilometres away in the Yashwant Nagar area.

“Aditya alleged that his aunt Asha had come to his place to attend his late uncle’s rituals….After all the ceremonies were over, Aditya was going to drop her at her home on scooter,” said a police official.

The accident occurred around 1 p.m. near a school gate when a water tanker allegedly hit their scooter from behind on the left side.

“While he was passing in front of a school gate, it was around 1pm, when the water tanker suddenly hit Aditya’s scooter from behind on the left side. Due to the impact of the accident his aunt, Asha Jadhav fell down from the scooter. The front tyre of the tanker crushed her hand and injured her,” said senior inspector Iqbal Shikalgar of the Jogeshwari police station.

In his statement, Aditya alleged that the tanker driver was on a mobile phone at the time and was not paying attention to the road. “His aunt was seriously injured and she became unconscious. She was rushed to the Trauma Hospital, Jogeshwari for treatment, where the doctors examined her and declared her dead,” said the officer.
