The Mumbai Police has arrested a 23-year-old man from Pune for allegedly issuing death threats to Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MP Sanjay Raut. The police suspect the accused, identified as Rahul Talekar, who does not have any political or criminal background, was inebriated when he allegedly sent the messages threatening to kill Raut using an AK-47 rifle.

According to the police, the accused first tried to get in touch with Raut over a phone call. Talekar told the police that he got Raut’s number from the Internet after which he dialed him. However, as nobody responded, he allegedly sent the threatening messages to Raut on WhatsApp, the police said.

“In the messages, the sender alleged that he (Raut) is being threatened by Lawrence Bishnoi. The sender also said that he  will shoot him down in Delhi with an AK-47 rifle,” a police officer said.

Accordingly, the Mumbai Police was informed. The suspect was located in Pune. He was detained from a restaurant with the help of Pune Police.

“On the complaint of his brother Sunil Raut, who is also an MLA, a case was registered under sections 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the IPC at Kanjurmarg police station,” DCP (Zone VII) Purushattam Karad said.

Soon after the FIR was registered, Sanjay Raut, speaking to media persons on Saturday, said, “Yesterday night I received a threat from a well-known gangster through a message on my phone. I have informed the police about it. I do not want to make a political issue of it because the present government is not keen on taking threats made to opposition leaders seriously. The police are being used only to suppress dissent and target opposition leaders.”

Speaking to media persons in Nagpur, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “The police are investigating the threat call to Sanjay Raut. The primary information is one individual under the influence of alcohol issued the threat. However, a thorough probe will be carried out to ascertain facts.”

Talekar is originally from Jalna. A graduate in arts, he runs a restaurant in Pune from where the police said he was arrested.

“As per our preliminary inquiry it appears that there is no connection between Bishnoi and the person arrested in our case. We have come to know that he saw some videos on YouTube after which he sent the messages. So far we have not come across any instance which suggests that he has a political or criminal background,” Karad said.

The police, however, said a thorough probe will be conducted into the matter.
