Mumbais five-star hotels have started facing the brunt of acute water crisis. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has curtailed water supply to as many as 22 star hotels in city,including Taj,J W Marriott and Oberoi. The water supply to commercial complexes at Nariman Point and Churchgate railway station has also been curtailed by the civic body owing to the water crisis.
Of the 92 star-rated hotels in the city,the civic administration has reduced the supply of water to 22 hotels. These hotels include,Taj Mahal Palace & Towers,Taj President,Taj Wellington Mews,Oberoi hotel,ITC Great Maratha,Four Seasons,Ambassador,Orchid,Centaur,Hyatt Regency,Le Meridien,Sun n Sand,Sea Princess,J W Marriott,Palm Groves,Eastern International,and Kumaria. In a bid to tackle the water crisis in the city,the civic body is targeting bulk consumers like hotels,which use around 100 million litres of water per annum.
We have taken action on five-star hotels as they are bulk consumers. Moreover,we have stopped supply to their spas,Jacuzzis and swimming pools, S Korlekar,chief Hydrualic Engineer.
A Taj spokesperson said,We are facing a water cut. We are getting water from private sources to avoid incovenience to our guests.
The BMC representatives visited us yesterday. They have reduced the supply to Trident at Nariman Point by 30%. We have been working on various conservation initiatives to reduce water consumption and briefing our staff to use water judiciously, said D Devendra Bharma,Executive Vice President,Oberoi Hotels.
Civic corporators had complained that the BMC was not cracking the whip on five-star hotels and big establishments in the city.
