The harsh reality that the transition from the junior ranks into the seniors is a huge leap, was amply demonstrated in the qualifying rounds of the Tata Open India International Challenge 2011,organised by the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, and hosted by the NSCI,here,on Monday.

India’s No. 1 junior player,Sameer Verma and No. 4 Shubhanker Dey,winner of the recently concluded Junior Masters, failed to make the main draw here, losing to Akshit Mahajan and Rohit Yadav respectively.

Verma, who came through the first qualifying round with a comfortable 21-13,21-13 win over Bahrain’s Al-Sayed Jafar Ebrahim Jafar, hit a road block in the form of Mahajan in the second round, losing the tough encounter 21-23,21-19,22-24. Mahajan,19,who trains at the Prakash Padukone Academy, kept his nerves, playing the big points better to earn a place in the main draw. Shubhanker Dey was shunted out in the first round itself, losing to Rohit Yadav 21-14,12-21,16-21.

In another interesting match of contrasting styles,Indonesia’s Dharma Alrie Guna got the better of India’s Srujan Nandaluri 21-14,17-21,21-11. Using his jump smashes to telling effect,Guna quelled the delicate touches of Nandaluri to make the main draw.
