The Thane police on Friday arrested a 59-year-old man for allegedly running over a 73-year-old woman Pushpa Agashe in Thane on Thursday morning resulting in her death. The police found the accused Mohammad Shaikh (59), a Kalwa resident, who is a van driver that takes trips between Kopri and Wada.
Senior inspector of Navpada police station Abhay Mahajan said that based on the CCTV footage they identified the vehicle, a van, and traced it to Kalwa, where it was parked. When the accused Shaikh came to start the van, he was placed under arrest and brought to the police station.
When questioned by cops, he claimed that he was unaware he had run over anyone and hence did not stop. The police arrested him and produced him before the court that sent him to judicial custody and later granted him bail.
The incident took place at the Teen Haath Naka junction in Thane when Agashe was returning home after purchasing milk. The vehicle ran her over and she was rushed to the Thane Civil hospital. The hospital assessed that she was in need of the super speciality JJ hospital, however, on the way to JJ hospital Agashe passed away.
She was identified by a nurse at the hospital who informed her family members about the incident following which police registered an FIR in the matter.
Agashe was a social activist and worked for 28 years with the Department of Atomic Energy where she received the best employee award for 2008, the family also said that her eyes were donated.
