The issue came to light when several customers, who had invested in various monthly schemes at the store, realised that the store had closed right before they were supposed to get their money and gold.
“The man took her to an abandoned factory near her house, where he held her at knifepoint and raped her. He then locked the girl inside the factory and left in the evening, but the girl managed to climb out of the factory’s roof,” the officer said.
“Mukane had killed his uncle in 1997 over some property issues. He was sentenced to life in 1999. However, in 2005, when he was granted parole, he never returned and went missing,” said a senior crime branch officer.
In his statement, the complainant said he had been visiting a temple since 2006, where he met the priest. Police said in 2009, the priest discouraged the man from marrying a woman he was in a relationship with and told him that she will not be able to conceive.
The boy allegedly told the family that he had to go visit another friend and left the house, police said. “He then went to the refuge area of the highrise and jumped or fell,” said an officer investigating the case.
“They were arrested when they were trying to break into a jewellery store on March 14. We were interrogating them, when one of them slipped up about the stolen phones,” said a senior officer from Navghar police.
