Heavy rainfall lashed the city on Monday with the Santacruz weather station recording the highest rainfall of the season yet 148.9 mm in just 12 hours (8.30 am to 8.30 pm). The Colaba weather station recorded 79.2 mm in the same period. The Met department expects heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
After 112.6 mm of rain in the 24 hours from August 30 to 31,the city experienced only light to moderate rain over the next two days. From 8.30 am on Sunday to 8.30 am on Monday,Santacruz received only 5.3 mm of rainfall while Colaba recorded 12.4 mm.
The heavy showers that began Monday morning caused waterlogging in various areas. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC)s disaster management cell received complaints of waterlogging from Lokmanya Nagar in Bhandup (West),LBS Marg near Mulund (West),Village Road in Bhandup (West),Sainath Subway in Malad (West),near Jarimari Cottage in Malad (West),Suja Hospital in Andheri (West),Paanch Raasta in Mulund,and at Akashi Gully in Kurla (West).
Five incidents of trees falling were reported from 8 am to 4 pm,of which three were in the western suburbs and two in the eastern suburbs. At least five persons were injured in a landslide hear Narayan Chawl close to Swadeshi Mill in Chunnabhati around 8 pm. Officials in the disaster management cell said three persons were sent to Sion Hospital,and two to Bhabha Hospital.
There is an upper air cyclonic circulation to the northeast of Mumbai,which has caused heavy rainfall in the city, said VK Rajeev,director of weather forecast,India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Meanwhile,maximum temperatures in the city dropped. Colaba recorded 27.8° C,down from 31° C the previous day while Santacruz recorded 28° C,down from 31.5° C the previous day. Relative humidity at 5.30 pm on Monday were 96 and 93 per cent for Santacruz and Colaba respectively.
We had issued a heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai,Konkan and south Madhya Maharashtra for Monday. It has been upgraded to a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai,valid till Tuesday afternoon. We expect these conditions to continue till Tuesday and dissipate after that, said Rajeev.
