Ulhasnagar: Over two weeks on mortuary raises a stink as it runs with two defunct ACs

The mortuary of Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar has been running with two defunct air-conditioners for over two weeks now, hospital authorities confirmed. Patients and their relatives have been complaining about smell emanating from the mortuary for over a week. The administration claimed that currently, one air-conditioner is working.

Satyajit Burman, an activist based in Ulhasnagar, claimed that the condition of the mortuary has been deteriorating since September. “We had claimed the body of one of the patients who we had admitted to the hospital on September 4. But the condition of the body was terrible. The decomposition had already begun, although the death had happened hardly a couple of days back,” he said.

Manohar Patil who had come to visit a patient on Sunday said: “The entire premises, especially around the mortuary, is stinking. When we asked a nurse what was causing the smell, she told us that the mortuary’s air-conditioners have stopped working and they have been managing eight to 10 bodies inside.”

Burman, who has earlier complained about the hospital’s waste management and other practices, said: “I had informed the authorities in September about the condition of the bodies emerging out of the mortuary. But since the past two weeks, the situation has become worse.”

The hospital administration claimed that one of the three air-conditioners is working. “There are only four bodies right now. There were four others, which we have moved out,” Additional Civil Surgeon Zafar Tavdi said. He added: “My senior, the civil surgeon, had already informed the Public Works Department in Kalyan a couple of days earlier about the defunct air-conditioners.” The civil surgeon didn’t respond to calls and messages.
