Two siblings — aged seven and five — were found dead inside an abandoned car at Mumbai’s Antop Hill area late Wednesday, police said adding that there were no injury marks on them, indicating that they got locked inside while playing and died of suffocation.

According to police, the children — identified as Sajid Sheikh (7) and Muskan (5) — stayed with their parents Mohabat and Syra in a makeshift house at sector 5 in Antop Hill.

A family friend Ravindra Shetty, who stays in the same locality said, “The children were playing outside their house and around 1.30 pm, they went missing. As their mother could not find them, she alerted her husband who was sleeping but he thought that they must be playing somewhere. He told her to relax and went back to sleep.”

While the mother kept looking for her two children, Mohabat woke up at around 6 pm after which they called Shetty, seeking help. “We then went to the police station and lodged a complaint. A team was deputed to locate the children that started checking the CCTV footages of the nearby areas,” Shetty added.

A police team that visited the spot inquired with the locals and as they could not find any clue on them, a woman police officer went to check an abandoned car parked near their house at around 10 pm. “She used her mobile phone’s torch to see inside and saw them in the car,” said an officer.

While Muskan was found on the driver’s seat, Sajit was lying on the rear seat. The two children were rushed to the hospital where they were declared brought dead.

“The family stayed at a stone’s throw away from the spot. The kids used to play around the area. We are trying to find how they went inside and got locked in the car,” he added.

The Antop Hill police registered a case of accidental death report late Wednesday.

Local residents alleged that the vehicle, belonging to one person named Raj, has been abandoned there for over a decade. “He used to stay in building number 182 and shifted to Sion Koliwada a couple of years ago. The vehicle was previously parked in the building premises, however, it was shifted outside after a compound wall was constructed,” said Shetty.

Police said they would record the statement of the car’s owner.
