Two injured as cable bursts into flames; contractor arrested

TWO labourers who were laying electric cables in Vikhroli suffered burn injuries Friday morning when one of cables burst into flames,police said.

Police said,Subramani Sakharpani (45) and his wife Shivkala (42),had been working for a contractor named Titus Curtado on the service road of the Tata Power sub-station in Vikhroli (East) since March. Curtado has been contracted by Reliance Energy to dig at the site to lay an electrical line.

Police said at 9.30 am,Sakharpanis were laying 22 kV cables when one was punctured and caught fire. The couple were rushed to Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri (E).

Curtado (39) was arrested from his Bhandup home. He was granted bail on Saturday. Police are on the lookout for a Reliance Energy official.

“Subramani suffered 20 per cent burns and was discharged. Shivkala,who suffered 40-45 per cent burns,is still being treated,” said sub-inspector Anil Gaikwad,Vikhroli police station. “Engineers from PWD visited the site Friday and will submit their report into the incident. Work has now been stopped,” he said.
