Two held for stealing 23 phones over a year

The police said the duo would move around small bylanes on their bike, looking for pedestrians talking on their phones.

THE MUMBAI Police Crime Branch arrested two men earlier this week for their alleged involvement in nearly 30 cases of theft of cell phones in the city over the last one year. The men had tried to sell the stolen gadgets at Chor Bazaar.

According to the police, the accused, Danish Shaikh (22) and Rahul Shinde (20), were held from Chor Bazaar by the Crime Branch’s property cell with 23 stolen cell phones and the motorbike they had been allegedly using to commit the thefts. Both Shaikh and Shinde are residents of New Maharashtra Nagar, Tardeo, and have been named as accused in cases of theft at several police stations across the city.

The police said the duo would move around small bylanes on their bike, looking for pedestrians talking on their phones . “They would generally target those who were…engrossed in their conversations,” said Dhananjay Kulkrani, DCP (Crime). He added that the duo would approach their intended targets from behind at a great speed and one of the men would grab the pedestrian’s phone. Taken aback and thrown off balance by the unexpected attack, the victims would often not be able to get a good look at the thieves, the police said.
