After much controversy over inadequate fire safety installations, the revamped Wankhede Stadium finally got the official Occupation Certificate from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, barely two days before the first World Cup 2011 match to be played on the ground on Sunday.

The BMC building proposals department issued the certificate late on Thursday evening after its officials paid a visit to the stadium.

S Y Darade, chief engineer of the department, said the certificate was not for the entire structure. “The stadium was already given an OC by the BMC in 1975 when it was built. The OC issued on Thursday was for the changes that were made in the North and South stands.”

The stadium had gone for a renovation immediately after the completion of the IPL first season in 2008. The Mumbai Fire Department had held back the fire compliance certificate to the stadium citing inadequate fire safety installations found during the first visit of fire officials on February 9. The department had cited the lack of a riser system and fire alarms besides inadequate ventilation in the basement.

However, during its second and third visit, the work had progressed rapidly and the fire compliance certificate was issued on February 22 after a double exhaust system and a double line sprinkler were installed in the basement along with the riser system and fire alarms across the stadium.
