Two children were critically injured and three others sustained minor injuries after a portion of a single-storey building at Shantinagar Dongri slums in Dahisar east collapsed on Tuesday morning.

Two children were critically injured and three others sustained minor injuries after a portion of a single-storey building at Shantinagar Dongri slums in Dahisar east collapsed on Tuesday morning.

Four-year-old Shabina Sheikh and one-year-old Kamlesh Waghel were seriously injured while Kamal Durgaram Sahasi (28),Seema Siddiqui (23) and Maya Waghel (21) suffered injuries on their legs, arms and shoulders. All the injured were rushed to civic-run Bhagwati Hospital and Rohit Nursing Centre in Dahisar. A part of the collapsed structure fell on Shabina’s head and back fracturing her arm. Waghel has suffered injuries on his head and face.

“We have cleared the debris and asked the residents to be careful. The slums are thickly populated and such incidents can cause major loss of lives,” said N R Narkar, assistant municipal commissioner,R north Ward.

According to an official,“The heavy rains for the past few days could have led to the building collapse as these structures are weak. The BMC can only enforce evacuation from its properties so there is no stringent measure to ensure that people are not living in these weak and rickety structures during monsoon.”

Most of the residents of the house were at the community centre to fill water when the incident occurred, said officials.
