Dismissed RPF constable Chetan Singh, booked on charges of murdering his senior and three passengers on a Jaipur-Mumbai train in July, filed for bail before the Dindoshi sessions court on Wednesday.

Singh, in his bail plea filed through lawyers Amit Mishra and Pankaj Ghildiyal, has claimed that he is suffering from mental illness. Singh has claimed that he has been facing mental health issues for the past few years and has symptoms of “white matter disease”. The term is used to describe damage to the brain’s white matter caused by reduced blood flow to the tissue and can have a range of neurological symptoms like weakness, sensory loss or vision changes.

The plea says that his family knows about his history. The court has directed the prosecution to file a reply to the plea. It is likely to be heard on December 1.

In the early hours of July 31, three passengers and an assistant sub-inspector were shot dead allegedly by Singh. Singh faces charges of murdering his senior Tikaram Meena, Asgar Ali Abbas, Abdul Kader Bhanpurwala and Syed Saifuddin. He also faces a section pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, based on the evidence by the police that the murders of the three passengers were communal in nature.

While his family claimed that Singh was facing mental health issues, the RPF denied having any knowledge about it.
