In a move to encourage reading habits among its corporators and officials,the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation plans to revamp its corporators library in its head office,beginning with a complete catalog of the books.

In a move to encourage reading habits among its corporators and officials,the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to revamp its corporators library in its head office,beginning with a complete catalog of the books.

Set up specifically for corporators in 1913,the library has seen a poor response over the years. In the past one year,only 30 corporators have used the library facilities. We are making a comprehensive list of the names of books and authors including the cover price of books. We plan to give the list to all the 227 corporators and other officials so that they can refer to the books in the library, said R G Sankhe,deputy municipal secretary,BMC.

It will take about two months to come up with this list, Sankhe added.

A proper well-equipped library is being planned once the renovation work in the BMC building is over,a civic official said.

A token provision of Rs 1 lakh for revamping the library had been made in the 2007-08 budget and it was supposed to increase over the years,said the official. However,the library revamp could not take place in the past three years,he said.

Corporators who are well read and have an interest in reading come here and refer to the books,the official said. They mostly refer to the library to check some municipal act as we have a lot of Municipal Act books,he added.

The library has over 2,000 books and can be accessed by corporators,ward officers,other officials,and even journalists without paying any fee. It has diverse range of books from history,law,municipal act books,geography,political economy,civics,literature and even on poetry. Some of the books are very old and have cover price as low as 1 anna,2 cents,1 rupee,etc.

Most of these books have been donated by people over the years,the official said.There is no specific penalty charges in case of loss of book. Until now there has been no incident of loss of any book,so we do not have any penalty structure,said Sankhe. According to old rules,if anybody loses a book the person has to replace the same book,he added.
