The Sewree sessions court on Saturday convicted three men for murdering a senior citizen at her Walkeshwar residence in 2008. The accused had killed Indu Ajit Udaishi (78),an LIC agent, and made away with cash and valuables. The victim was a widow and lived alone at Walkeshwar.

According to a statement by the Mumbai police,Additional Sessions Judge V B Kamkhedkar sentenced Sandeep Anand Pawar (24),Sunil Tukaram Narkar (25) and Vinod Shambhoo alias Angholya Sakharam Shivshankar (30) to life imprisonment.

On October 18,2008,Udaishi’s sister Jayaben Kapadia and a friend had called up Udaishi. Despite repeated attempts, she had not attended their calls for two days. Growing worry, they had gone to her home and broken open the door. They were shocked to see Udaishi’s body. She had been strangulated to death with a handkerchief.

Kapadia told investigators that two days before her murder, the victim had called her up and said one Sandeep Pawar who was working as an office boy with her adopted son Prithviraj Merchant had come to her flat with two persons for taking an LIC policy.

After enquiring with the neighbours a day later,Kapadia learnt that Udaishi had not responded to the doorbell. Newspapers and puja packets were also lying untouched outside the door.

The police had formed two teams to trace Sandeep Pawar and his associates. While Pawar was nabbed in eight hours from Khed,Narkar was arrested from Lalbaug.

Shambhoo had fled to Tirupati and while returning to Mumbai after learning about the police investigation, had consumed poison to avoid arrest but had survived. The police also recovered the booty from the accused.
