Three policemen, including an assistant inspector rank officer, were suspended by the Mumbai police for allegedly trying to “settle” a financial dispute between two parties, A senior police officer confirmed Thursday.

Assistant police inspector (API) Ravindra Jalandhar Jadhav and constables Vishal Ashok Jadhav and Karamchandra Prabhakar Dubey, all attached to the Kherwadi police station, were suspended on Monday by the additional commissioner of police (West region).

Police sources said that the three cops were linked to a financial dispute between two individuals, namely, Mufti Nasimuddin Shaikh and Mehul Mehta.

It has been alleged that API Jadhav, despite not being on the day shift duty, allegedly handled the complaint pertaining to the financial dispute during the day shift. They went out of the duty hours and handled the matter in an individual capacity for a personal intention.

“The officer and two constables tried to ‘settle’ the dispute out of the police station by taking one of the party’s sides and exerted pressure on the other party to settle the matter. They were not supposed to do any sort of settlement; police are not meant for such things. They should have ideally duly registered a case and probed it lawfully as per the merits of the matter with an unbiased approach, the IPS officer said.

When seniors learnt about it, they ordered an inquiry and suspended the three policemen.
“They have been suspended pending inquiry. In the inquiry the veracity of the allegations would be ascertained,” said the IPS officer.

Such malpractices will not be tolerated in a disciplined force like Mumbai Police, another officer said.
