The mother of all shows

In these times of recession,it was strange yet relevant to be attending a two-day luxury conference. It’s an even greater pleasure to see great art, exotic jewelry and ultra luxe designer wear as it is now that I truly appreciate all that I have.

A year ago spending a couple of lakhs got you peanuts. Today spending peanuts gets the person a little more than peanuts. But as Amit Chopra said, peanut is still peanut. So today,we are aiming to sell luxury without guilt and change the mindset of the consumer. Having to restrain oneself, doesn’t mean depriving yourself of feasting the eyes and uplifting the spirit, albeit with a tinge of sadness when you fall in love with Columbian emeralds that may finally give you something in common with Angelina Jolie.

After a long time,I saw an extraordinary art show brought down by Gaurav and Vikram Assomull. The artists included 3-D genius Patrick Hughes. His Pallici pallicici is definitely one out of the 101 must sees before you die. I stood by Stephan Cipre’s Gandhi—it socked me right in the soul. The sheer mastery of this sculpture had me rooted to the ground. I was fortunate to experience the beauty of thought of the artist. While the letters of GANDHI stood atop each other in clever angles, the portrait of Gandhi on the metal letters stone back mysteriously almost not appearing to be a face at all.

David Kracov’s monotype certainly had me ‘Thinking outside the Box’ while Jorg Doring mixed technique on canvas I’m the blend hit a close chord with me.

While giving credit to all these wonderful and talented men,the woman behind it all is someone who needs to be applauded not just as an entrepreneur but as a mother. It’s when you interact and bond with the charming lady that your belief in the mother is reinforced.

Sangeeta Assomull has lived her life with utmost grace and dignity and her sons carry that legacy as effortlessly as she has taught them to. The role of the mother is the one that is the most undermined and taken for granted. As primary caretaker and responsible protector,it is the most satisfying but challenging role any woman has been bestowed on her. How we live our lives and what we say and do have an unprecedented impact on our children that stays with them for a lifetime.

Last weekend,Mother’s Day was celebrated in England and while I’d like to wish all my favourite mums a Happy Mother’s Day to help our children escape a world of tantriks, incest, suicides, rape and child pregnancies. I’d like to quote something I heard at the luxury conference: “We have not inherited the world from our parents, instead we have borrowed it from our children.”

Having a mother of all shows is frankly not worth it if the show isn’t. No matter how trite the philosophy,as parents we need to live by doing unto others as we’d like others do unto our children. It is the only way to ensure a better place for them in the future.
